Monsoon is a season where people normally avoid the seas and beaches due to rough conditions of the waters. But for hard-core surfers, this is the perfect time to bring out the surf gear to meet the water's edge. For this reason, monsoon-loving surfers have flocked to Balok Beach every February since the 1990s -- their playground to catch that perfect wave.
Located 15 km north of Kuantan in Pahang, Balok Beach is the official venue for the Balok Wind Challenge, a sports competition for wind-based activities such as kitesurfing, kitebuggy, windsurfing, sailing and stand up paddle.
This international competition has gone through many name-changes from Kuantan Challenge to Balok Beach Regatta, to Monsoon Madness, to Blackstone Kitesurfing and Windsurfing Challenge. Despite the brand changes, one thing remains the same – it is where surfer dudes gather to catch the thrill of the wave.
This year, it will be held from 23 until 25 February with contestants hailing from Australia, Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, United Kingdom and Ukraine.
So, don’t forget to catch the many stunts and antics of amateur and professional windsurfers as they boldly challenge the rolling waves of Balok Beach.
The beach is acknowledged as one of the 10 best beaches in the world by the international wind-surfing and kite-surfing sportsmen. In fact, "Windsurf," the number one windsurfing magazine, described it as one of the best surfing spots near Kuantan with amazing views, freeride spots and starting point for down winders. With the open sea and wind speeds reaching 20 knots per hour, the swells can be anywhere between 0.5 m and 2 m high waves.
